Eater Carolinas has been obsessively tracking Asheville chef Ashleigh Shanti for the past few years in anticipation of her putting down roots for her Good Hot Fish restaurant. Tomorrow, Saturday, January 20, is the big day. Shanti will open her fish house at 10 Buxton Street, Asheville, next to Burial Beer’s music hall Eulogy.
Shanti mixes ideas from traditional fish camps with Black Appalachian and Southern cuisine for the menu. Good Hot Fish items include her popular fish sandwiches, hot crab dip, Sea Island red peas, hush puppies, shrimp burgers, and more.
Shanti has spent the past few years popping up around the country frying seafood and serving cold beers to promote her restaurant. For those not familiar with the pop-ups, you may recognize her from season 19 of Top Chef or as part of the 2019 class of Eater Young Guns for her work with Benne on Eagle, which she left in 2020.
In 2022, she told Eater Carolinas, “There is something to be said about working for yourself and wanting ownership of your stories. Falling in love with a community and pouring into it. I just want to replicate that business of a modern-day fish camp,” she says.
Good Hot Fish will open Tuesdays through Sundays, from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
