Longtime Charleston residents Jenny Ferrara and Michael Bourke are voracious readers and avid connoisseurs of the local food and beverage scene, so they decided to take a leap and combine their passions into a Cannonborough/Elliotborough shop where others can share in their zeal. The husband-and-wife duo plans to open Philosophers & Fools early next year at 50 Bogard Street.

Named after a William Faulkner quote in The Sound and the Fury, the corner shop will carry a variety of new books in varying genres, along with options for coffee, wine, beer, and snacks, like baked goods and panini sandwiches. “We both have a deep love for books and choose to spend a good portion of our free time reading and enjoying a glass of wine or a beer while doing so,” says the couple, “We found ourselves saying, ‘Why don’t we create a place where others can enjoy this too?’ We want Philosophers & Fools to be a cozy, welcoming bookstore where you can feel comfortable coming in by yourself to read, meet up with a friend, or your book club, and enjoy a snack or beverage.”

Philosophers & Fools is nestled in the same neighborhood as ultra-popular restaurants Vern’s and Chubby Fish, so Ferrara and Bourke hope diners consider stopping at their shop for a drink while waiting for a table or a post-dinner nightcap. Their wine program will be organic/sustainable leaning, and they will have a selection of canned craft beer, coffee from Counter Culture, and an assortment of other nonalcoholic options.

The duo is currently putting the finishing touches on their shop while launching their website and a Kickstarter. If all goes according to plan, Philosophers & Fools will open early in the new year.
