Despite the pandemic, one James Island bar decided to forge ahead once outdoor seating was allowed by the state. Highly anticipated eatery Bar George opened at 1956 Maybank Highway over the weekend. The project from industry vets Alex Lira (Bar Normandy), Joey Goetz (the Belmont), Brad Cline (the Ordinary), Hank Weed (Chico Feo’s), Philip “Surfer Phil” Lawrence III (Bar Normandy), and artisan John Griffiths comes online at a precarious time, but many patrons are already smitten with the place and leaving positive feedback on Instagram.
Bar George is open for patio service and takeout. According to Instagram, it is open from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The food menu includes oysters, a shrimp roll, chili dogs, Peruvian chicken, a cannellini bean salad, and more. The cocktail list ranges from a dirty martini to a highball with Terrace Theater popcorn rum and Coca-Cola.
Once fully open, Bar George is anticipated to be a new Charleston hot spot with all the big-talent names behind the project.
