The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about another change to dining out at restaurants, and this time it’s yurts. Reservation vehicle Resy announced that 13 dining establishments across the country will allow customers to book heated tents for dinner through a partnership with American Express. Savannah’s the Grey is one of the few restaurants to offer the yurt experience through the new program.
The Grey executive chef Mashama Bailey tells Eater that she had fun coming up with a prix fixe menu for the tents. She imagined winter-y rich foods like fondue, schnitzels, local oysters, and crab Louie for the offerings.
Restaurateur Johno Morisano says that the yurt experience came about from American Express and Resy as a response to the upcoming dilemma of restaurants not being able to generate revenue in the winter months, when many diners may still prefer to dine outdoors due to the spread of the pandemic. The Grey will have 10 tents available on December 3 through February.
Morisano and Bailey imagine that it will be a luxury experience for patrons. There will even be a tea service appetizer for brunch (imagine the Instagrams). “What happens in the yurt, stays in the yurt,” says Morisano with a laugh.
This service is available through Resy for American Express card holders.
