Arts organization Pure Theatre vacated 477 King Street, and now it appears that a jazz bar will take its place. There’s an alcohol beverage license on the window of the storefront for Fortz Jazz Lounge. Though, it could be Fontz Jazz Bar — the handwriting leaves much to interpretation.
Eater asked a few prominent King Street restaurateurs about the establishment, but no one seems to have many details.
This would be one of the first jazz bars to open in downtown Charleston in quite some time. The Mezz that sat atop the former Sermet’s has been long gone, and one of the only regular spots for live jazz seems to be the lounge at Charleston Grill.
Right across the street from dance club Republic Reign, this new jazz bar could be a more laid back addition to the hectic Upper King scene.
