A glimpse at the new menu

On New Year’s Eve, Eater Charleston’s 2018 Restaurant of the Year Tu premiered its new Indian outlook for 2019. On the set menu for the evening’s celebration: pea chaat, pakora, vada pav, chicken tikka, gobi, and dosa.

Tonight, Friday, January 4, Tu opens the doors to the rest of the public to try out chef Joshua Walker’s new Indian menu. The restaurant isn’t taking reservations, but opens at 430 Meeting St., from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. The Tu team updated its website to reflect the changes, including a copy of the lunch and dinner offerings with more choices than the New Year’s Eve menu.

When the change was announced, Walker explained that he had become obsessed with Indian food. “... it’s so flavorful — salty, sweet, sour, spicy — and there’s so much tradition because it’s such a huge country,” said Walker. He explained the impact of colliding cultures on the cuisine in India and his vision to tell a story with their new menu. Walker, along with his wife/co-owner Duolan Walker-Li, and co-owner Joey Ryan, explored different dishes in a research and development phase over the past few months.
