Boxcar Betty’s Builds a Fried Chicken Empire

More locations on the way

Boxcar Betty’s
Erin Perkins is the editor of Eater Carolinas, covering the food and restaurant scene across North and South Carolina.

Chicken sandwich champion Boxcar Betty’s will open in North Charleston this July. Located at 7800 Rivers Ave., this location will be the third in the Lowcountry (behind West Ashley and Summerville). The restaurant takes over the former Pieology Pizza in the Promenade Chopping Center. Co-owner Ian Macbryde said they decided on the location because of the growth in the Rivers Avenue area and the the need for more local options among the row of chains.

Boxcar Betty’s also has plans to open a store in Mount Pleasant in the fall. The fried chicken masters recently migrated north with a eatery in Chicago.

The chain debuted in 2014 and critics have compared the sandwich to Chick-fil-A, but without the polarizing politics. Boxcar Betty’s quickly racked up praise for its addictive, plump chickens.

Is this just the beginning? Will Boxcar Betty’s spread far and wide with one in every major city? Is this the Lowcountry version of Shake Shack?
