New Jersey Bowl Chain Takes Place of Black Bean Co.

Acai bowls, banana bowls, coconut bowls

Can’t get enough of the food bowl trend? New Jersey-based Playa Bowls will soon bring bring bowls of all varieties to King Street: acai, pitaya, banana, chai pudding, kale, hemp, coconut, and oatmeal.

Taking the place of vegan hangout Black Bean Co., at 429 King St., Playa Bowls will open its first South Carolina store soon. And according to the website there is one headed to Folly Beach as well. Playa Bowls started on the Jersey Shore with founders Rob Giuliani and Abby Taylor and has grown to over 40 locations on the East Coast.

Acai bowls have washed over the Lowcountry recently, with offerings at Huriyali, Beech, Clean Juice, Gogogreens, and more. The purple treat has completely replaced the froyo craze of 2012-2015. Will Charleston be pro-bowl or no? Leave it in the comments if you think there’s a favorite in town and look for acai to take over Instagram feeds this summer.
