Nathan Davenport, corporate chef of Human Element Hospitality (the team behind Market Street steakhouse Burwell’s), has set his focus to open a forthcoming rooftop seafood restaurant named Balao. After joining the team, Davenport and Human Element Hospitality owner Kenneth Emery discovered a shared love of the ocean and travel, so new restaurant Balao was born.
Set to open at 16 N. Market St., the eatery will offer classics like clam chowder with Clammer Dave’s clams, oysters rockefeller, or jumbo lump crab cakes with remoulade. There will also be less traditional fish house items like South Atlantic sushi on the half shell, cold-smoked South Carolina wahoo, blackened seafood tacos, and blue crab beignets. Also look for raw bar items.
Below is a sample menu.

For anyone who wants to try the food before Balao opens (early 2018), Davenport will add a few dishes to the Burwell’s bar menu. Raymond Dial is still executive chef of Burwell’s.
