Joseph Jacobson Opens Black Wood Smokehouse in West Ashley

Meet the meats

Erin Perkins is the editor of Eater Carolinas.

As of yesterday, Windermere Shopping Center has a new barbecue eatery Black Wood Smokehouse. Chef Joseph Jacobson (formerly of Sweeney’s, Gibbes Cafe, and The Med) opened the restaurant after a hiccup with his previous project Wild Hare Smokehouse in the same space. Jacobson told Charleston City Paper that co-owners Aris Newton and Tommy Eiserhardt locked up Wild Hare a week after opening. The chef then purchased the business to open up as his own establishment.

Jacobson has wanted to open a barbecue location for some time now. The menu focuses on slow-cooked foods and smokehouse fare like pulled pork sandwiches, pastrami reubens, pulled chicken, pork ribs, sausage, smoked turkey breast, brisket, and even more meats. The non-meaty offerings also tomato pie, boiled peanuts, Bibb lettuce salads and South Carolina greens.

Black Wood Smokehouse sits at 90 Folly Rd. and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will stay open until 10 p.m. starting next week.
