Shake Shack Picks Charlotte, Not Charleston, For New Store

Bummer

Erin Perkins is the editor of Eater Carolinas, covering the food and restaurant scene across North and South Carolina.

Danny Meyer, South Carolina’s feelings are hurt — how could you pick Charlotte over Charleston for Shake Shack’s first foray into the Carolinas? For those not familiar, Shake Shack is restauranteur Danny Meyer’s world-conquering burger chain, originally based out of Manhattan. The buns are buttery and supple, the meat is always perfectly charred, and the ShackSauce is an equal balance of creaminess and zip. Oh, and they have frozen custards and crinkle-cut fries.

Charlotte Observer reports that Shake Shack will move into the Park Road Shopping Center before the end of 2017. The paper also states that Meyer has gone on record to say that “the restaurant chain would not expand into North Carolina as long as the state’s controversial House Bill 2 was still on the books.” HB2 was repealed in March.

After Eater Charleston spotted Meyer visiting the Holy City in 2015, we’ve had fingers crossed for a Shake Shack to come this way. Maybe next year.
