After the short-lived Smith Street Pizza shuttered, Broad Street eatery Brown Dog Deli took over to open a second outpost. The sandwich-heavy restaurant opened its door over the past weekend at 225 Calhoun St., and it is already full of college students and residents from the Harleston Village neighborhood.

The menu is similar to the original location with soups, salads, sandwiches, and a few starters. There’s shrimp and grits and hibachi for heartier meals.

Smith Street Pizza co-owners Nick and Ben D'Allesandro (D'Allesandro’s Pizza) and Dave Uecke (Formerly of Chick’s Fry House) took over the address this past February from Norman and Susan Hanf of Norm’s Pizza — but it only stayed open for three months. Norm’s was a staple for many of the students in the neighborhood and from judging the crowds coming out of the new Brown Dog Deli, they may have a suitable replacement.
