Hookah bar Cafe Paradiso sat on Market Street since 2006. It was a stop for a post-meal coffee, a water pipe, or lunchtime sandwiches. To be honest, it lost a bit a relevance when Italian staple Giribaldi Cafe shuttered, and locals found more exciting ventures away from The Market.
Recently Cafe Paradiso closed the doors, making way for Welkin Coffee Charleston at 51-A South Market St. Currently, the interiors are the space are cleared, the new coffee shop/beer garden has applied for a liquor license, and it is currently hiring.
Former Kudu Coffee assistant manager and technical support at Counter Culture Coffee Derrick Smith claims the role of owner/operator for Welkin. Charleston Magazine highlighted Smith in 2013 as the "reigning latte art king."
