Charleston Restaurants and Bars Contribute to Mother Emanuel Hope Fund

After Wednesday night's horrific shooting at Emanuel AME, Charleston woke on Thursday trying to understand the tragedy and mourning for the victims. It was a heartbreaking day, and the citizens of the Holy City came together to hold each other up. Local restaurants wanting to show support donated portions of the evening's proceeds to the Mother Emanuel Hope fund to assist the church and the victims' families — many are continuing the effort over the weekend.

Post and Courier's Hanna Raskin wrote a poignant essay on why we should still gather around tables in these times of tragedy and grief:

The South, which has known so much sadness, has lots of comfort foods. This surely isn’t the time to stop serving them. But let’s at least honor our slain neighbors by recognizing that when we return to restaurants and bars, it’s for the physical and spiritual solace they offer – not the live music on the patio.
