Melvin's Barbecue might be the closest approximation to a Charleston-based "chain" burger restaurant. It's fast casual with a drive-thru and two locations in the Lowcountry. Melvin's has been a South Carolina tradition since 1939, so they certainly have staying power.
While the restaurant is mostly known for pulled pork, locals swear by the classic burger. Urban legend goes that in 1999, celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse declared Melvin's beef on buns to be "America's Best Cheeseburger."
Could Melvin's make its way across the country?
