Along with Pita Pit, multiple frozen yogurt shops, Yo Burrito, and Andolini's Pizza, another staple for College of Charleston students bit the dust yesterday. Planet Smoothie, on the corner of Warren and King streets, closed to make way for a Myrtle Beach-based ice cream shop Republic.

Reporter Warren Wise spoke with owner Bradley Kohr, and he said they hope to be open by March 1. Just last year, award-winning ice cream shop Jeni's opened to long lines of patrons, proving a demand for the frozen dessert. According to their online menu, Republic carries fewer flavors than Jeni's, but claims to have "world’s most delicious ice cream." Let us know if you've sampled the Myrtle Beach brand of dessert and how it stacks up.
