There's a giant poster in the window of 41-A George St. depicting a bowl of pork-laden noodles with the name Menkoi Ramen House marking the address. The Columbia-based restaurant confirms on their Facebook page, that they are, indeed, opening a second location in the Holy City. The space was previously held by Greek place Manny's Neighborhood Grill.
While the ramen trend hit it big in other parts of the country, Charleston was sort of skipped. Noodles make guest appearances on menus around the Lowcountry,—Two Boroughs Larder, The 'Wich Doctor, or Xiao Bao Biscuit—but there are few dedicated noodle houses. The short-lived Izakaya Ramen shuttered after 35 days and other authentic versions of the bowls of goodness can only be found by seeking out little-known places like Riso Noodle House.
An Upstate version of the menu is online, and reviews are favorable—perhaps George Street has a hit.
