The smell of hot dough and melted cheese is irresistible to even the finest fine dining chefs and employees. One cannot survive on tasting courses alone, and pizza is pretty much the opposite of anything found in white-clothed dining rooms. Eater asked some chefs and other restaurant personalities where they go for a slice or pie around town.
Chef Sean Brock of Husk/McCrady's responded with a resounding "Monza Monza Monza!!!" He's been a fan of the Italian race car themed eatery since day one. His favorite menu item is the Fangio with sausage, jalapenos, and onions. Restaurateur Brooks Reitz of upcoming Leon's Oyster Shop also votes for Monza's Fangio pizza. Great minds must think alike. Kevin Johnson from The Grocery also prefers Monza, but his order is the Ciccio, a pie topped with mozzarella, ricotta, Pecorino Romano, Parmigiano-Reggiano, and garlic.
Both The Ordinary's Mike Lata and Hominy Grill's Robert Stehling like to dine at EVO Pizzeria in Park Circle.
Chef Eva Keilty, formerly of Warehouse and soon to be at upcoming The Palace Hotel, likes to pick up a Napoletana, which is a broccoli rabe and sausage pizza, from Desano Pizza Bakery. She's a big fan of the free Calabrian chilis offered at the restaurant. If Keilty sits down for a meal, however, she says she'll stop by D'Allesandro's for a pie.
FIG's beverage director, David McCarus, tells us that pizza is his favorite food. He orders a pepperoni pie from Mellow Mushroom on Tuesdays and an In Bianco, add mushrooms, from D'Allesandro's on Fridays.
