39 Rue de Jean has long been the place to go for a steak frites or escargots, but, in a move predicted by Eater, back in January, restaurateur Hank Holliday confirmed he will bring a new French bistro to Market Street.
The upcoming eatery is named Brasserie Gigi. Executive chef Frank McMahon told City Paper editor Stephanie Barna that he suggested the name Gigi (his wife's name) as a joke to Holliday, and it stuck. He also told Barna that he thinks the offerings at the new eatery will have a broader appeal than that of the former Italian menu at Mercato. The website is already up for those who would like to peruse the traditional French bistro menu. A glance reveals brasserie favorites like salad Niçoise and moules frites. The opening is set for April 2.
