Market Street bar Mad River shuttered without warning on November 1, and just a few weeks later, we learn who is taking the restaurant's place. North Carolina-based 5Church plans to move in by summer 2015. The original restaurant is on the corner of 5th and Church Streets in Charlotte — hence the name, but it's fairly serendipitous that they are moving into a former church at the 32b North Market St. address in Charleston.
Charlotte magazine named executive chef and partner Jamie Lynch "Best Chef" in 2013 and 2014. The menu is extensive and eclectic (lamb burgers listed next to tofu with kimchee), but with all the hits — beet and goat cheese salad, Brussels sprouts with bacon, meatball sliders. 5Church describes their current concept as a "seasonal menu seamlessly blend[ing] traditional and contemporary cuisine while sourcing fresh, local ingredients."
Check back for up-to-date details on the changes to the old Mad River address.
