Two Charleston see and be seen staples show up on Bon Appetit's nominee list of "50 Best New Restaurants in America." Oyster emporium The Ordinary and innovative Asian spot Xiao Bao Biscuit are in competition with 48 other eateries for the title of best.
The nomination of The Ordinary comes as no surprise, as Condé Nast Traveler named them one of the "Best New Restaurants in the World" in June, but XBB is a bit of a curveball. The unassuming Asian soul food spot has mostly stayed out of the national media until BA editor Andrew Knowlton traveled to town for the Charleston Pub Crawl and proclaimed XBB's corn, eggplant and green curry salad "newfangled" and "the best dish [of the event]." The magazine recommends, "Go with a crew, take in the chill, breezy vibe, and order everything on the menu." XBB doesn't take reservations, so show up early if you want to grab a seat before everyone else in America swarms to discover why they made the list.
The top ten and best will be announced on August 14.
