There's something of a breakfast shake-up happening on Market Street. Barbara Jean's, a Southern restaurant in the heart of the downtown tourist district, is shuttering. Sunday will be their last day, after three years of serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner. Back in 2008, there was a Barbara Jean's over in Mount Pleasant (it's a mini-chain that launched in Georgia). At the time City Paper review Robert Moss noted the crab cakes were a "highlight" but, "Ultimately, though, the food falls short."
The replacement is already waiting in the wings. According to their site, Southern breakfast and lunch chain Another Broken Egg Cafe is slated to open a location at 99 Market St. in July. They started in Louisiana in 1994 with one Broken Egg Cafe, and in addition to the Charleston offshoot, this map shows about 20 restaurants in operation and 11 in the works. No word on what the menu in the Holy City will look like, but other spots are dishing out beignets, grits, burgers and eggs served a bunch of ways, like in "scrambled skillets," omelettes and "signature benedicts." Their motto appears to be "inspiring eggs to excellence."
