Americana restaurant Sweeney's is slated to replace Island Soul Food Café on East Maybank. Owner Jim Sweeney confirmed that dishes in his 75-seat place will be prepared by New York chef Jared Secor, who has worked as a sous chef at Mario Batali's Manzo in Eataly. The spot plans to open in mid to late May for lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. While the final menu is still in the works, Sweeney said they will serve regional American dishes like Yankee pot roast, stone crab salad, corned beef and cabbage, in addition to full cocktail list with occasional food and beer pairings (something like Colorado Mountain trout with a craft beer from Colorado).
The John's Island space will have an "upscale bistro" vibe with a blue glass chandelier that will hang over a VIP table. In addition to indoor seating, Sweeney says their stone patio will seat 35 people and harbor a fireplace.
Sweeney was a Hotel Food and Beverage Director for Embassy Suites, Hilton and Marriott. His wife Dawn, who will play an active role at the restaurant, works for Johnson and Wales University.
