Welcome to Road to the Eater Awards, in which the Indiana band Houndmouth chronicles the good eating along the Southern leg of their "From the Hills Below the City" tour, culminating at Eater Eve and the Eater Awards. This series is presented by Canon PowerShot, makers of the PowerShot S110 and SX280 cameras that captured all the action.

From Asheville, we kept the southern vibes going strong, literally. That night we played at a venue called The Southern Cafe and Music Hall in Charlottesville, Virginia. No joke. It was quite fitting given the theme of our Eater Awards involvement.

We left North Carolina through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Once we hit Virginia, we found another fitting coincidence to be our first food destination on this stop. The Mountaineer Cafe in Madison, Virginia provided us with a damn fine meal, even if the name of the joint sounded like it belonged in West Virginia. We stopped in pretty early as we headed to sound check, so we loaded up on some delicious greasy diner style lunch food and kept our beverages to water and coffee.

When we arrived to The Southern, we were pleased to find that it was yet another venue that also served food. In you ever find yourself on tour with a band, you'll find how incredibly convenient this is. The first thing we saw on the menu was cornbread with pepper jelly and whipped honey butter. Yep, we were still in the South. Once we had just enough food to be pleased but not too much to be unable to perform, we took to the stage that night and had a great show. It was our first one in Charlottesville, but we will definitely be back.

The locals kept telling us there was one specific diner we had to try, so we committed ourselves to going to visit this staple. The place was called the Blue Moon Diner. We woke up and went straight to the Blue Moon for breakfast. And the locals were right—it was to die for. No return trip to Charlottesville will be complete without a stop at the Blue Moon. We loaded up on everything from eggs, to pancakes, to hash browns, and everything in between. This meal was the perfect way to end the southern run of our tour, as our next stop was to be in Philadelphia, PA.
Check back tomorrow when the band files Brooklyn, NY.
