In the fall, West Ashley lost its hot dog palace Jack's Cosmic Dogs, but it was promised that a Southern California-style eatery would quickly spring up in its place. Well, Mex 1 Coastal Cantina is almost here, in all of its laid-back, surfer-y glory. They're aiming to open January 9, according to an ad on Craigslist.
Chef Donald Barickman, formerly at HMGI spots like Magnolias and Cypress, is hammering out the menu, which will include "fish tacos, tortas, rice bowls, and fresh salads." Going along with the theme, they'll be serving rum, tequila drinks and beer.
Here's more about the team, straight from their Facebook page: "The bar will be overseen by two of Charleston's most popular mixologists, Morgan Hurley (Blu) and Sklyar Hurley (Fuel). The Brainpower behind the brand is none other than locals Roddy Smith (Raising Canes), Dave and Chrissy Lorenz (Sticky Fingers Rib House, Jack's Cosmic Dogs, Food Masters, Inc) and Jack Hurley (Jack's Cosmic Dogs)."
